Julie grew up in the south-eastern suburb of Glen Waverley and attended Syndal High School. After finishing high school, Julie enrolled herself in a secretarial course at a Business College in Glen Waverley so that she would have a professional qualification to kick-start her career.
After 12 months of study, Julie obtained a Secretarial Diploma and was also awarded Dux of her class.
Immediately after obtaining her Secretarial Diploma, Julie secured her first job as a secretary to a small family-owned business in Glen Waverley and a year later, looking for a more challenging role, she landed a job as a secretary to two of the partners in a large, multi-national company.
Two years later, in need of another challenge and whilst considering what to do next, her father, who at the time owned his own Chartered Accounting Firm, approached her about working for him as a secretary “temporarily” until he found a full-time replacement. This “temporary” job ended up lasting 17 years!
Six months after starting work with her father, the in-house bookkeeper retired and Julie was asked if she would consider taking on the role in conjunction with her secretarial duties. She spent the next six months learning both accounting and bookkeeping procedures from the other chartered accountants she worked side by side within the firm, primarily her father. From there, Julie enrolled herself in an accounting course via correspondence in her spare time, finishing the course with an Accounting Diploma. She quickly learned that whilst she enjoyed accounting – bookkeeping was actually her true passion.
With the introduction to computerised accounting and bookkeeping systems like MYOB, Julie was instrumental in implementing these systems into practice and setting up and training the clients on the new systems. She quickly discovered that not only was bookkeeping her passion but she loved the aspect of being able to provide one-on-one training to clients.
After her father retired and sold his business (17 years later), she went on to work for a wholesale stationery business as the Financial Controller for nine years until that business was sold.
Since then, in the last nine years, Julie has held various positions with various companies including but definitely not limited to; Bookkeeper to Private Investigators, Bookkeeping and Office Administration to a Digital Agency and Finance and HR Manager to a Disability Provider.
In 2021, Julie landed the position within our team at Canny Group as our Bookkeeper. Having come full circle, she is back once again doing exactly what she loves the most – providing bookkeeping, software and Business Activity Statement (BAS) assistance to a varied range of clients in an accounting firm.
Outside of the office, Julie is kept busy with her twin teenage boys! Being a sports lover herself, having played netball for over 20 years and enjoying a hit of golf from time to time, Julie has been involved in her son’s basketball teams from the very start, having coached their team for a number of years. Not to mention, even winning a grand final in her first year of coaching and now holds the position of Team Manager. In her downtime, Julie enjoys reading and cross-stitching to relax and during the winter, you will find her watching the footy on the weekends, a passionate North Melbourne supporter and long-term member.
